Taylor Hollingshead

The light bulb moment for Taylor Hollingshead, founder of apparel and lifestyle brand The Hill Coastal Co., came two years ago following an unrelenting search for the ideal sweatshirt. The Washington native and busy mother of four, whose husband, Ryan, plays for the Los Angeles Football Club, yearned for a cozy but sophisticated style that celebrated her family’s new home in Rancho Palos Verdes after moving from Dallas, Texas.

“I couldn’t find one I loved that said ‘PV’ or ‘Palos Verdes,’” explains Taylor. “I wanted something classic and simple, something that looked like your old favorite gym sweatshirt but slightly elevated.”

After plenty of scheming and deliberating, Taylor had an admitted “gut check” in September 2024 and took a personal leap, immersing herself in months of experimenting and planning. During the day she homeschooled her young children, but after bedtime she spent late nights toying with different design concepts. Soon after, she turned to graphic designer Meredith Hunter, whose coastal sketches of the Pacific Northwest had caught her eye on Instagram.

“I fell in love with the coastal illustrations she was posting during COVID,” shares Taylor. “So when I had the idea for The Hill Coastal Co., I knew I had to reach out.”

The pivotal moment came when Taylor bravely stepped out to her son’s soccer game in Malaga Cove wearing her very first creation: a black, vintage-inspired sweatshirt emblazoned with “Palos Verdes” in a crisp white university font. She hadn’t mentioned it to anyone and was nervous about the big reveal.

“I was so in my head about it, thinking, This is the worst idea ever,” notes Taylor. “But immediately after the game, another mom came up to me and asked where I got my sweatshirt. That was the exact boost of confidence I needed, and it was my proof of concept.”

Since then, Taylor’s brand has flourished, with printing handled by Chris Jenkins of Monsters Outside—a fellow parent from the hybrid homeschool program—and embroidery provided by the Carson-based family-run business Imadri. The collection features more than 20 styles, including cotton crewneck sweatshirts, T-shirts, tank tops, baseball hats, hoodies and kids’ tees.

Each piece highlights elements like hand-stitched horses and peacocks symbolizing the Peninsula, as well as cities, neighborhoods, and local beaches such as Rat Beach, Rolling Hills, Lomita and Valmonte.

Every item is thoughtfully packed by hand in Taylor’s garage, often with help from Ryan and their children. Taylor personally delivers orders to the post office each week, fitting it in between carpool duties and sports practices. Her designs can be found online and at local retailers including Pointe Discovery at Terranea Resort, The Aloha Bungalow and Corners of the World.

“I never want to make products that I’m not super proud of or that I wouldn’t wear,” says Taylor. “I don’t ever want to put something out just to put it out.”

Taylor plans to launch a “Welcome to PV” tote later this year. It’s a customizable beach bag featuring other goods from her line and intended as a thoughtful gift for welcoming new neighbors or local friends.

“I love to create, so watching new things start as an idea and then come to life is easily the best part of the job for me,” adds Taylor. “The first time I saw someone wearing our sweatshirt in public, I started crying happy tears. And getting to work with other local business owners is inspiring and fun.”
