We’re Digging the Vintage Hawaiian Charms of The Laylow in Waikiki
The Hawaiian Islands have had their share of drama this year. Volcanoes! Hurricanes! A reboot of Magnum, P.I.! But fortunately our favorite tropical paradise endured and is ready for your next visit. One property in particular has caught our attention with its hip design and unique character.
The Laylow, part of the Autograph Collection, is a 251-room hotel that blends mid-century modernism with vintage Hawaiian charm. Located in Waikiki on Oahu, the hotel recently underwent a $60 million renovation and sits next to the newly redeveloped Market Place and its popular retailers and eateries.
What we love most about this hotel is the attention to detail. The 186 rooms and 65 suites all feature king beds and private lanais (terraces). All the spaces come appointed with custom-made or salvaged furniture inspired by mid-century modern classics.
The signature monstera leaf wallpaper was especially designed for the hotel after vintage bark cloth patterns. In the lobby a stunning terra-cotta breezeblock wall, sculpted in graphic patterns reminiscent of Hawaiian tapa and open to the trade winds, preserves the flow of air and energy throughout the space.
Hideout is The Laylow’s signature restaurant that serves reimagined Pacific Rim classics made with the freshest ingredients from the ocean and local farms. Executive chef Bryan Byard merges his love of art and food to create edible masterpieces such as fresh local fish prepared with mango salsa or macadamia nut butter; short ribs braised in coconut porter; Korean flatbread with bulgogi, kim chi and pickled chili aioli; and crispy pork belly, Brussels sprouts and guacamame (avocado and edamame) dip with root chips.
Guests can enjoy a wide selection of artisan cocktails and Hawaiian craft beers on an open-air lanai with two spacious fire pits that overlook Kuhio Avenue. The signature cocktail, the No. 120—named after The Laylow’s status as the 120th in the Autograph Collection of hotels, features PAU Maui vodka, fresh island fruit and mango boba pearls. Enjoy your cocktail at the bar, or take it to a cabana that borders a tension-edged saltwater pool.
