Wellness by Design

Architecture firm dSPACE Studio creates healthy homes from the inside out.

Enduring homes are defined as much by how they feel as by how they look. Along the coast, where light, air and landscape shape daily life, a quiet idea of luxury is taking hold—one expressed not only through beauty but by how a home supports health and well-being. Well-designed spaces bring calm, focus and comfort to everyday living.

This is the work of dSPACE Studio. Known for its warm modern aesthetic, this AIA award-winning residential architecture firm designs homes as immersive, multisensory environments—personalized spaces that respond to site, climate and the rhythms of everyday life. Drawing from neuroarchitecture and biophilic design, their work explores how light, materiality, sound and spatial flow influence how we feel, think and live.

“The built environment has an extraordinary influence on health and well-being.”

“We now spend as much as 90% of our time indoors, disconnected from the natural world,” says dSPACE principal and founder, Kevin Toukoumidis, AIA. “But humans evolved to thrive in constant dialogue with nature: dynamic light, moving air, and ever-changing sounds and scents.”

It’s a profound shift. In many ways, we are Stone Age creatures living in a modern world—just beginning to understand how the spaces we inhabit impact wellness.

“The built environment has an extraordinary influence on health and well-being,” Kevin adds.

In practice, this perspective reveals itself in subtle but powerful ways. A home is designed not just for views but for how sound travels—buffering ambient noise while allowing breezes and distant waves to register within.

Transitions between spaces are calibrated to how they are used. Ceilings lift to create openness, then compress to foster a sense of refuge. Materials are selected not only for visual composition but for texture and warmth—surfaces that invite touch and register temperature. Even scent and airflow are considered, with operable window walls bringing the seasons into daily life. Clients often describe the result in simple terms: “The home just feels right.”

That’s thanks to neuroarchitecture—an emerging field at the intersection of medicine and architecture that explores how our bodies constantly process environmental cues. Proportion, rhythm, acoustics and light all register subconsciously, influencing stress, blood pressure, mood and sleep. Over time these signals accumulate, impacting long-term health and well-being in ways that are subtle yet profound.

dSPACE approaches each project as a personalized environment, tailored to how each client lives. Spaces support daily rhythms, from morning routines grounded in natural light to quiet areas designed for focus and restoration. Kitchens open to outdoor spaces for gathering, while private zones are carefully tuned for comfort and retreat. Subtle calibrations of light, shadow, air and material create environments that feel intuitive—supporting a healthier, more balanced way of living.

“It’s a highly collaborative process—one our clients truly enjoy,” Kevin notes.

The result: homes that feel refined yet relaxed. Whether set along the coast, in hillside neighborhoods or within more private landscapes, each project responds to its environment and its occupants. Spaces are attuned to daily rhythms. Views are carefully framed to invite curiosity and quiet joy. And materials age in ways that deepen a sense of connection and comfort.

The effect is subtle but enduring—an invisible luxury. Homes that quietly support health and well-being in everyday life.
