Describe the featured project.
Relocating from the East Coast, our clients discovered a rare half-lot in Manhattan Beach with sweeping, unobstructed ocean views—the perfect setting to create their California dream home. Over the course of nearly three years, Waterleaf collaborated closely with Matt Morris Development to bring their vision to life.
The home’s defining aesthetic was a serene, understated palette we affectionately called “50 Shades of Beige.” Layered neutrals, luxurious textiles, custom millwork and richly textured wallcoverings create interiors that feel warm, sophisticated and inviting. Every room was designed to evoke a sense of calm while balancing elegance with effortless livability.
Above all, the home was envisioned as a place where family naturally gathers. Our clients wanted a welcoming retreat where their grown children would always look forward to returning, grandchildren could play freely, and long, memorable meals could be shared. Despite the home’s compact footprint, thoughtful space planning maximizes every inch. A custom dining banquette extends from the kitchen island, framing ocean views and becoming the family’s favorite gathering place. Across four levels, the home seamlessly accommodates 4 bedrooms, 4½ baths, 2 family rooms, a home office, fitness studio and sauna.
As a deeply personal finishing touch, the homeowners placed black tourmaline within the walls of the home before they were drywalled. Long associated with grounding and protection in many traditions, the stones hold special meaning for the family and reflect their intention to create a home that feels peaceful and restorative.
What sets your firm apart?
The combination of personalized service and exceptional resources. For 20 years, we’ve cultivated lasting relationships with architects, builders and premier vendors. Our Manhattan Beach studio features an extensive in-house materials library with thousands of fabrics, wallcoverings, flooring, tile, finishes and furnishings, allowing clients to experience virtually every design element in one place. Supported by our experienced back-office team, we provide a seamless, efficient process from concept to completion.
What is your secret bullet?
At the heart of Waterleaf is the belief that exceptional design is rooted in exceptional relationships. We partner closely with our clients throughout every phase of the design journey, thoughtfully translating their vision into homes that are both deeply personal and timeless. Many of the families who first entrusted us with their homes nearly two decades ago continue to return—whether designing second and third residences across the country, reimagining their existing homes or introducing the next generation of their family to our studio.
