Founded in 2007, Regatta Capital Group® is an independent Registered Investment Advisory firm that provides fiduciary wealth management advice to families, business owners, group 401(k) plans and endowments. The $1.6 billion* firm offers financial planning, investment management and multifamily office services to professionals, business owners, retirees, nonprofits and families across 40 states and several countries, with particularly deep roots in the South Bay. Regatta Capital Group®’s four managing partners—Russell Mohberg, Spencer Kelly, Nick Ozer and Britt Joyce—have more than 70 years of combined industry experience.
What is the guiding principle behind Regatta Capital Group®?
To do right by the client. Our team’s culture is built on this principle. For example, every team member has read Raving Fans by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles. We don’t just want satisfied clients, but we want clients passionate about our service model. Every decision, recommendation and action is grounded in our ethical and fiduciary responsibilities to serve the client. We continuously improve our multifamily office to deliver everything we want for our own families and friends, then share it with a limited number of like-minded clients.
How do you define your firm’s client-relationship model?
You are the CEO, and we are your CFO. We are the quarter-back of your financial team, here to keep you organized, build financial statements, plan for retirement, help you through business sales, family dynamics, children, grandchildren, tax planning and estate planning.
What is your approach to investments and the unique aspects you bring forward?
We use ultra-low-cost ETFs for broad market exposure and then add top-tier managers for private equity, private credit, real estate, infrastructure, farmland and venture capital. We also manage in-house stock portfolios as an added layer of expertise and value-add. We invest with tax-awareness, but the tail does not wag the dog; total return after-tax, after-fees is what matters.
How is the firm rooted in the South Bay?
We planted our flag on Rosecrans (across from Bristol Farms) 18 years ago. Most of our firm’s team members live and work in the South Bay, with some having lived their whole lives in Hermosa and Manhattan Beach. We have built wonderful relationships with generations of families, businesses and nonprofits—like one of our longtime favorites, Mychal’s Learning Place.
What’s a common misconception you’d like to clear up about firms like yours?
We heard a business manager once say, “You guys are all pretty much the same, but we work with you because we like you.” That is nice and we appreciate it, but after looking at competitors’ statements for 18 years, we can tell you that we aren’t all the same. There is a wide range of fees, service levels, financial planning acumen and investment capabilities.
Looking ahead, what new initiative or direction excites you for the next year?
We are excited to develop our co-intelligence service model as AI becomes our partner. And we are looking forward to adding one of the top private equity managers in the country that recently opened to qualified purchasers in a very investor-friendly structure. We would like to add one or two more CFP® professionals to our South Bay team to work with our growing clientele.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from advising others?
Not every financial decision is black or white; often the answer lies in the middle. The math needs to be weighed together with what makes the client happiest, stress-free or most fulfilled. Here at Regatta®, we have our own internal book club, and earlier this year we read The 5 Types of Wealth by Sahil Bloom. And you guessed it: Wealth is not only defined by our financial status, but it is also defined by our mental and physical health, as well as the time we have available to us and the community of friends and family close to us. A great advisor knows their client in a truly personal way, because the best advice is holistic. If taking the promotion increases your income 10% but decreases the time you spend with your kids by 50%, is it truly worth it? If reducing taxes slightly gives you significantly less control of your money, is that really the best solution? The answers are always custom for each client’s personal situation—and that is where we excel.
