LuskinOIC’s Model of Care

True wellness means caring holistically for the patient and seeing them as more than their injury. We are committed to providing every patient, regardless of background, the same high standard of care given to our collegiate and professional athletes. This includes access to high-quality physical therapy, cutting-edge surgical techniques and comprehensive physician evaluations. As a board-certified family and sports medicine physician, I can evaluate a musculoskeletal injury while also recognizing when an underlying medical condition warrants further workup. This comprehensive approach helps patients get back to what they love, whether that is competing at an elite level or returning to daily activities pain-free.

Practice Growth

Since I first started seeing pediatric patients, our practice has become much busier! With that volume comes more knowledge and expertise—not only for managing common diagnoses but also more complex and rare conditions. Those cases often require more difficult conversations, which I have become more comfortable having as my practice grows. I do my best to approach patients with compassion and empathy, recognizing how much impact my words carry. Deciding to hold a young athlete out of sport is never a decision I take lightly, but when I make it, I know it is in the best interest of the young person in front of me.

Injury Prevention

Programs like FIFA 11+ reduce soccer-related injuries in youth athletes, and we routinely reference them when counseling patients. LuskinOIC’s long-standing partnership with Students Run LA has allowed us to examine running-related injuries among adolescent marathoners and design a strength-training program specific to them—ultimately providing evidence-based recommendations to reduce injuries. In our Sports Medicine Clinic, we have an athletic trainer who teaches home exercise programs, communicates with physical therapists and high school athletic trainers, and ensures athletes return to sport safely. This coordinated, team-based approach puts the patient and their recovery at the forefront.

State-of-the-art Imaging

Having in-house MRI imaging and a renovated Sports Medicine Center will be a game-changer. The process of obtaining images and receiving a radiology report will be streamlined, reducing stress for families who may already feel overwhelmed. Our physician will see high-quality scans as soon as they are completed, allowing us to quickly direct patients to surgical colleagues when needed or get them into physical therapy sooner when a scan is reassuring.

A Physician’s Role

The most difficult part of my work is delivering hard news. Telling someone they have torn their ACL or need surgery will never become easier. I work every day to approach that conversation with the same care I would give a family member. The most rewarding part is seeing the joy when someone is cleared to return to their sport. They have put in countless hours of rehabilitation, and getting to say, “You can go back to soccer” and witnessing that immediate excitement never gets old.

Meeting Patients Where They Are

Every time I see a patient, I ask what they do for physical activity and what they want to get back to. Understanding what matters to them helps build trust, and if we build that trust early, they will feel comfortable returning with new concerns. How I explain an injury also varies by age. For many adolescents, being an athlete is a defining part of their identity, and losing that due to injury carries a real mental and emotional toll. I approach those conversations with empathy. A lot of youth drop out of sports around age 12, and if I can keep kids engaged in physical activity, I know it will have a lasting positive impact on their overall health and well-being.
