Building Trust
Neil Bhamb, MD: Building trust starts with listening—really listening—to a patient’s values and needs, not just diagnosing a condition. It’s easy in today’s health care environment to slip into a factory mindset, where patients become cases or checkboxes. But that’s not care, and it’s certainly not how you build trust. The best way to earn trust is by showing trustworthiness. That means being an advocate and a partner, not just a provider.
Allyson Estess, MD: Give patients the information they need, take the time to truly listen and make decisions together. Every patient is unique, with different goals, different concerns and different needs, and that should shape every aspect of their care. I believe the best care comes from understanding the whole person, not just the image or diagnosis. I also feel that making decisions about medical treatment is a two-way street—I encourage my patients to ask questions, explore options and take an active role in their treatment.
Sanjay Khurana, MD: I try to bring transparency and clear communication to all of my patient interactions. What I do as a spine surgeon can be nuanced or complicated at times, and these procedures need to be well communicated every time to each patient. Having practiced for over 20 years, I am lucky to have patients who are happy to provide testimonials and often speak directly to prospective surgical candidates.
A Health Care Career
Dr. Bhamb: I explored the business side of health care before becoming a physician. What drew me to medicine was the patient-physician relationship. There’s something uniquely fulfilling about helping people one-on-one. While I recognize that you can make a broad impact through the business side of health care, I find it much more rewarding to connect directly with patients.
Dr. Estess: Early in college, I sustained a significant knee injury and found myself on the patient side of health care. I experienced firsthand how essential it is to have a medical team that listens, supports and helps you heal—especially if you’re looking to return to sport. It was during that time that I realized I wanted to be part of that kind of care for others.
Dr. Khurana: I have long been drawn to the healing arts. Even during early childhood, I had a strong feeling that my path would lead me to become a physician.
South Bay Hot Spots
Dr. Bhamb: For me, the South Bay is all about the vibrant, fun, and loving beach community. There’s this perfect blend of hardworking individuals and a laid-back, Southern California vibe. Whether people are out biking along the coast or just taking a stroll blocks from the beach, there’s always this great energy and sense of connection.
Dr. Estess: My family enjoys being close to the beach and spending a lot of time there together. We appreciate the incredible variety of restaurants—our kids are adventurous eaters, which has made exploring the South Bay food scene even more fun for all of us.
Dr. Khurana: I love the South Bay—the community, the amenities, restaurants and everything that comes with it. And I enjoy the beach and racket sports whenever I have time. We are very spoiled here!
