Calista. is a new salon in the heart of Hermosa Beach, offering hair services for women and men. Owner Brittanie Hawley started her business as an independent stylist 15 years ago, working at salons in Northern California, Santa Monica and Hermosa Beach, before opening Calista. in January.

What traits make a great leader?

A good listener—being available to hear the stylists’ needs, opinions or wants. Accountability—holding others accountable and owning your mistakes as a leader. Consistency—your expectations and standards don’t change depending on the person or on your mood. Recognition—you notice efforts and teamwork, not just mistakes.

How does authenticity play into your business model?

We are where authenticity meets luxury. This idea came when I knew I had more to give in this industry, not just to my own clients but to other stylists and their clients too. I’m transparent with who I am and accept how each stylist shows up as their own business. I build trust by following through with what I say and giving stylists a space where their needs and opinions matter.  We each bring a beautiful individuality that makes Calista. what it is.

What can we each do to support other women in business?

Put the ego down. At the heart of this industry, our job is to make our clients (women) feel better about themselves, and we can do the same for one another as stylists. There is room for all of us to succeed.

In what ways do you stand out in your market?

Appointments at our salon are less transactional and more about the connection and the experience. We offer a luxury experience where it doesn’t feel intimidating. Whether you’re looking for a subtle refresh or a complete transformation, our goal is simple: to bring your hair dreams to life while making you feel welcomed, cared for and confident. We focus on the details from the moment a client enters the salon because we know you are trusting us not only with your hair but with your time. I have really enjoyed creating a space where people want to be, where we all stay a little longer and it’s not just another appointment on their calendar.
