Come for the Beer, Stay for Dinner

Diners delight in the culinary offerings at a Hermosa Beach establishment known for award-winning beer.

There is a particular pleasure in discovering an exceptional meal where no ceremony is required. At Hermosa Brewing Company, dinner might arrive on a familiar brewery tray rather than white linen, but what lands on that tray can be anything from delicate stuffed squash blossoms to bright ceviche, fresh fish or a beautifully cooked flat iron steak.

All of it comes from a deliciously talented chef, a tiny kitchen and a 400-square-foot dining room.

That contrast is part of the charm. Hermosa Brewing Company is, of course, known for its locally crafted beer. But inside its intimate Hermosa Avenue location, the food crafted by award-winning Chef Aaron has quietly become one of the South Bay’s best reasons to return again and again.

The restaurant offers a dependable core menu filled with crowd favorites. The hot chicken sandwich brings the heat. Korean tacos balance savory, sweet and spice. A warm soft pretzel remains a natural companion to a freshly poured beer. Yet the daily specials are where the kitchen’s personality comes fully into view.

The list of specials, known as The Board, changes every two or three days. The Board might feature silky, meal-worthy avgolemono soup and slow-smoked brisket with mac and cheese on one visit and Higata oysters with uni, scallop ceviche and smoked ribs the next. The approach makes repeat visits unusually rewarding. Regulars can stop in several times during the same week and never order the same meal twice.

Rather than treating specials as an afterthought, Hermosa Brewing Company uses them to follow the seasons, work with fresh ingredients and give the chef room to create. The result is food that feels considered without ever feeling precious. Dishes can be refined, colorful and surprising, but they are still served with the ease and lack of pretense that define Hermosa Beach.

On the outdoor patio, that philosophy becomes literal. A guest can come straight from the sand, pull up a chair and enjoy a gourmet-caliber meal without changing clothes. No jacket is necessary. On some beach days, neither is a shirt.

That relaxed presentation may be why the food still feels like a locals’ secret. Guests arrive expecting a neighborhood brewery and discover an eatery producing dishes rarely associated with a taproom, much less one with such a tiny footprint. Add the award-winning brews to this scene, and you have a perfect, flavor-filled day.

But no trip to Hermosa Brewing Company would be complete without a pint of their flagship Hazy AF IPA—a juicy, hop-forward favorite and one of the beers that put them on the map. In fact, their rotating 12-tap lineup showcases a wide variety of award-winning beers, classic favorites and constantly changing seasonal offerings to complement any diner’s palate. With a tap list that’s always evolving, there’s something new to discover with every visit.

The company’s Torrance Brewery and taproom offers another way to gather, with private-event options accommodating intimate groups of approximately 20 guests as well as celebrations of more than 200.

In Hermosa, however, the experience remains wonderfully simple: Come as you are, see what is fresh, order something unexpected and let the food speak for itself.
