05/18/12Pin meNew or vintage brooches can add a little sparkle to your life instead of just sitting in a drawer somewhere. Lately I've been noticing brooches when I go to vintage shops or flea markets; but I never quite knew what to do with them. The owners of Ava + Aliria taught me to pin them on my chains to create a more substantial statement piece. Some other ideas came to mind once I got thinking: layering a flower pin with a sparkly center, add them to a clutch or bag, use them as an extra gift on top of a present. I'd love to know what creative ways you've discovered to style your brooches. |

05/08/12lightingWhen it comes to lighting, I'm a bit of a snob. Sorry, I just am. I certainly have made mistakes with light fixtures, and I still marvel at lighting done right and think, "I would have never thought of that!" However, light fixtures need to be addressed when you are doing any sort of fixing up, renovating, building, or apartment hunting. It's such an easy thing to do when you are trying to make your space unique and inviting, especially if you are renting. If you are someone handy, or know someone that is, then changing out fixtures should be no problem. If you are renting you should save the original fixture, then switch back before you move. A couple things to do when looking for fixtures: stay away from super contemporary fixtures (they just look... |

04/25/12favorite booksI really love big beautiful books that are about interior design or fashion. I can't get enough. It's difficult to narrow down a favorite, but these are a few that are great for different reasons. 1: a perfectly kept house is a sign of a misspent life by Mary Randolph Carter-this is a great book for anyone who struggles with keeping it all together amongst the kids, dogs, and everyday life. 2: Lifting the Curtain on Design by Vincent Wolf-he's a super talented designer and is very generous with his secrets and tricks of the trade. He has a great blog too at www.vincentwolfblog.com 3. The Joy of Decorating by Phoebe Howard- just a gorgeous book. She's a wonderful designer, works with her husband who is a designer as well, and they have a new furniture... |

04/12/12organizationOrganizing can be something one can put off until stuff is piled everywhere and it becomes too overwhelming to think about. If you take on the task, however, it makes a world of difference in your life. I'm constantly finding new ways to organize clutter that piles up after a busy week. I've found that it's easiest to focus on one area of the house, and once that area is tidied up, move on to the next. Another tip I've found useful is to do all of the cleaning out, tossing, and donating first, then find your containers, bins, and baskets to store the remaining items. Make it look pretty by using labels and tags, keep things uniform in color, make use of pretty china cups and trays, and neatly line up objects that you can't hide away. Lastly, get yourself... |

04/01/12Tray ChicHaving trays scattered throughout the house is a great way to contain odds and ends and special items you want to display. There are many different styles and sizes to choose from. You can keep them on your nightstand, coffee table, kitchen table, or entry way. They add order and a bit of style to what might otherwise be a chaotic mess of just "stuff" laying around. I found these on line via kmart, erin condren, ralph lauren, lotus bleu, west elm, z gallerie. Local options where you can find great trays: fowler & moore, fringe, waterleaf, gum tree, reaney design co., erin condren |

03/26/12Table SettingWhen thinking about setting a table for a party or special occasion, it's easy to switch things up with a few key pieces. Depending if you want a more casual or formal look to your table, a simple change of a tablecloth can set the tone for a meal. You don't have to spend a lot of money to set a nice table; a few budget friendly tips are: Flowers from your garden put in old jars or cans make a great centerpiece, use a sheet (starched and pressed) for a white tablecloth, fabric remnants can make great napkins, baskets laying around can be used for bread or a centerpiece, mismatched flatware and glassware is always in! And...don't forget with a great iPod mix, dimmed lights, lots of candles around, and wonderful friends you can't go wrong! photos via:... |
